June 2017 Meeting Notes

Our June meeting was an enormous success! It was wonderful seeing so many fresh faces. We are going to grow this thing and we're going to make some changes in our local community!

Public Policy

These are the issues we are working on being proactive on advocating for, but is no means an exhaustive list of the issues we will take part in. If there is anything that is important to you, feel free to mention it at a meeting or send me an email at lpatl@lpatl.org!

Marijuana Legalization

We went over a few topics to do with efforts to get marijuana legalized. Peachtree NORML, an advocacy group we have partnered with to advance these efforts, is having a potluck in Grant Park on 7/9 at 1PM in lieu of their typical monthly meeting. We should all get out there and attend if possible! Wear your Libertarian shirts to make sure they know we support them!

There is still a proposed city ordinance, 17-0-1152, to decriminalize possession of under an ounce of marijuana. It is held up in committee so we need folks reaching out to the Atlanta City Council, specifically folks on the Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee, and let them know that we support the ordinance!

We have a quick facts page created by Laura Williams that should help people spread the message of how prohibition is hurting Americans. The site can be found at http://www.lpatl.org/marijuana.

School Choice

We have launched a quick facts page on School Choice as well! A big thank you to Donte' Thompson for writing it up! This should help people to understand the issues at hand and what we are trying to do to overcome the problem. Please review at http://www.lpatl.org/school_choice.

Fourth Amendment

Tim Smith is currently putting the finishing touches on the quick facts page for this issue.

Fulton County Tax Assessments - #AppealATL

With the outrage in Fulton County over the outlandish increases in people’s tax assessments. The Libertarian Party of Atlanta seized the opportunity to fight for reducing taxes. Laura Williams drafted a press release that contained a link to a document that could be downloaded and used as a support guide to appealing your tax assessment. The guide was downloaded over 500 times! Fulton County has since frozen the tax assessments at 2016 levels. I like to think we played a role in that, no matter how small.

Political

If you'd like to be a candidate or help on a campaign, please sign up at http://www.lpatl.org/political. We are always looking for people to run for office as our goal is to run Libertarians up and down every ballot in Atlanta! If you're unsure of where you want to run and just want to talk to someone about it, please reach out to me at lpatl@lpatl.org.

Current Candidates

  • Ryan Graham - Public Service Commission for District 3 - https://graham4ga.com/
  • Demond Kennedy - Georgia House of Representatives for District 90
  • Keith Lisenbee - Brookhaven City Council for District 1

Outreach

We need people to start identifying opportunities for tabling around Atlanta. We want to get out to as many festivals as possible given Atlantans love affair with the almighty festival. Even if we can't get a table reserved, we can show up and hand out collateral as many places as possible to help spread our message.

Kevin Fortune volunteers regularly to head out to popular places around town, like Little 5 Points, and hand out literature and talk Liberty. It's an excellent opportunity to get experience and help the brand! If you're interested, please contact me at lpatl@lpatl.org and I will get your information to Kevin.

Social

Brunch at Cafe 458

We will be having a brunch at Cafe 458 on July 2 at 10:30AM. Cafe 458 is a restaurant that supports the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency and has excellent food! We had a blast a few months ago when we did this and plan on doing it more often. Make sure to RSVP so we have a good head count for the day of!

August Anniversary

Our August meeting will be a bit special as it is the unofficial anniversary of the LP Atlanta starting to meet up! We will be moving the time from 2PM to 6PM and we'll have special speakers from the various projects we've worked on! Please be sure to check it out!
